Elementary
Overview
This important instrumental program allows students to begin lessons as well as prepare for middle school music study. It is open to all students in grade 4th & 5th grades.
Goal
The goal of the Elementary Orchestra Program is to provides basic, fundamental technical and musical skills such as position and posture, tone production and intonation. The fourth grade level will begin with rote instruction in order to progress more efficiently. After the basic skill level is established, note reading will be introduced after the first three or four weeks. Students in grade five will perform in two or three part ensembles. Because full musical maturation does come to fruition until high school, elementary students should enter the elementary program with the expectation of a long term commitment.
Objectives
Students Will Be Able To:
- Read basic standard notation.
- Play major scales up to 2 sharps.
- Play notes throughout the reasonable range of the instrument.
- Play and understand simple and complex time signatures.
- Gauge dynamics to different situations and styles.
- Understand articulation differences and sound qualities.
- Play more complex arrangements under a conductor.
- Use of various bowing techniques.

- Essential Elements Series Book 1, 2, or 3 depending on playing ability
- Advanced Students - music to discretion of director and ability levels
